Nut Milk: Easy Methods for a Delicious, Dairy-Free Alternative

As a Health Coach, I love sharing my favorite recipes for smoothies, bowls, and healthy snacks. A common question I get is, “How do I make nut milk?” Nut milk is a fantastic dairy-free alternative, packed with protein and healthy fats, and it’s incredibly easy to make at home. Once you see how simple it is, you might never go back to store-bought nut milk!

Here are two methods to make nut milk: a quick and easy version and a more traditional approach. Both are delicious and versatile, perfect for enhancing your favorite recipes.

1. Quick Nut Milk

If you’re short on time, this fast method will surprise you with its simplicity!

Ingredients (for 4 cups of nut milk):

  • 4 tablespoons of your favorite nut butter (almond, cashew, walnut, etc.)

  • 4 cups of water

  • Sweetener of choice: 2 pitted dates, 1 tablespoon of raw honey, or 1 tablespoon of maple syrup

Tools:

  • Blender

Directions:

  1. Blend: Combine the nut butter, water, and sweetener in a blender.

  2. Process: Blend until smooth.

  3. Chill: If you prefer it cold, refrigerate for 1 hour before enjoying.

This method is incredibly convenient and perfect for when you're in a hurry!

2. Traditional Nut Milk

For those who enjoy a more hands-on approach and want to make nut milk from scratch, this method provides a creamy and rich result.

Ingredients (for 4 cups of nut milk):

  • 1 cup of raw nuts (almonds, cashews, or your choice)

  • 4 cups of water

  • Sweetener of choice: 2 pitted dates, 1 tablespoon of raw honey, or 1 tablespoon of maple syrup

Tools:

  • Blender

  • Nut bag or cheesecloth

  • Strainer

  • Jar or airtight bottle

Directions:

  1. Soak Nuts: Soak the nuts according to the following times:

    • Almonds, Hazelnuts, Macadamias, Peanuts, Pine nuts: 8 hours

    • Pecans: 4 to 6 hours

    • Walnuts: 4 hours

    • Cashews: 2 hours

    • Pistachios and Brazil nuts: No soaking needed

  2. Rinse Nuts: Thoroughly rinse the soaked nuts in a strainer.

  3. Blend: Place the rinsed nuts in a blender with 4 cups of water and the sweetener. Blend for 2-3 minutes until the mixture is smooth.

  4. Strain: Secure a nut bag or cheesecloth over a jar and pour the nut mixture through it. Squeeze the bag to extract the milk, leaving the pulp behind. You can use the leftover pulp to make nut flour: simply dry it out, blend it, and store it for later use.

  5. Store: Transfer the milk to an airtight bottle and refrigerate. It will keep for 3-4 days.
